One level up

This is the entrance to the observatory in Göttingen. It is always closed. The metal grating, too.

A first view into the back of the tape drive.
If you know the device you can see that the capstan motor is missing. That's bad. And you can already see the cut-through cables at the left. They originally went to the heads but someone has cut them to get access to the motor which he wanted to steal.

The "drawer UP", not much of the analog electronics is left. I will have to reconstruct that.

Hehe, that's my H316 with some new stuff around. It's getting more and more comfortable....

Nice device, isn't it? I thought of taking it with me - but I don't have the space. It's still there waiting for the scrapyard - like everything we did not pick up.

A Helett-Packard HP-IB dot matrix printer. I found it interesting - but left it. It's bulky, no space :-(
If anyone is interested....

The cut-off capstand motor cable - did I mention that we found the motor laying around on a workbench in another room of the obervatory? Everything seems to be complete. Even the screws are present. Just one washer is lost.

1024x768    Full size
Someone has really been stupid: Why cut the cable if there's a plug??? And why that near at the motor? Don't understand that.

  Powered it up!
No fuse blew, no smoke... The machine is nearly electronics-free: Most is controlled by mercury wetted contact relays :-)
It loads a tape nearly correct. Vacuum works, most vacuum switches seem to work, too.
The regulation of the right wheel seems to work correctly: It releases and breaks the wheel, turns forward and backward according to the tape loop position.
On the left side there is some misbehaviour: You have to short one of the emergency stop vaccum switches to get the machine up. And it does not does not wind the tape on the left reel. Only the brake seems to work at the moment.
I have a good feeling about the chances to get the machine back to work again :-)
